Review – One Day
by David Nicholls (Novel)
If you want to be left sitting in a pool of your own tears,
and screaming ‘WHY’ at the top of your voice, then you need to read One Day by
David Nicholls. Brilliantly written, Nicholls tells the story of the
relationship between Dexter and Emma over twenty years. Full of missed
opportunities and when-are-they-gonna-get-it-on moments, it’s the perfect
romantic modern novel which defines a generation. The reason why One Day has
been such a success is because it is a novel anyone can relate to, as
ultimately it’s a story about lost love. But more importantly it’s honest,
Nicholls doesn’t paint a rosy view on love and relationships, he shows them for
what they are – hard work and a lot of slip ups. It’s a story about love in the
real world, not in some film set where the happy ending has already been
written.
The most important thing I took away from reading One Day is
that you never know what is going to happen, and that you should never
consistently put off doing things, as one day, it may be too late and you will
probably end up regretting it for the rest of your life.
